📌 The Battle for Higher Pension Heats Up
In a bold and strategic move, the Bhilai Steel Plant (BSP) Employees’ Provident Fund Trust has taken legal action against the Employees’ Provident Fund Organization (EPFO) by filing a petition in the Bilaspur High Court. This comes after months of frustration over denial of higher pension benefits under the EPS‑95 scheme, despite Supreme Court rulings and previous assurances.

🧾 Why This Case Matters
Employees — both retired and currently serving — feel cheated after being deemed ineligible for a benefit that has already been extended to others across the country. The Trust claims that EPFO is violating constitutional and legal rights by denying higher pensions to members of exempted PF trusts like BSP.

⚖️ Legal History and EPFO’s Delay Tactics
Interestingly, BSP PF Trust had already won a favorable ruling in the Jharkhand High Court back in 2020. That judgment clarified that members of exempted trusts are indeed eligible for higher pensions. But even after the Supreme Court’s landmark verdict on November 4, 2022, EPFO issued circulars (dated December 29, 2022 and January 25, 2023) that effectively blocked higher pensions again — this time through confusing and contradictory interpretations.

🗣️ SEFI and Officers Association Take the Lead
The legal charge is being led by Shri Narendra Kumar Banchhor, Chairman of SEFI (Steel Executives Federation of India) and President of the BSP Officers’ Association. He strongly criticized EPFO’s “stubborn” behavior and emphasized that the BSP PF Trust tried every possible route before moving to the courts.

🔍 EPFO Ignoring Repeated Requests
Mr. Banchhor revealed that multiple letters and direct meetings with EPFO Headquarters in Delhi, including a recent one on May 8, failed to resolve the matter. Instead, EPFO remained rigid, claiming that their policy framework does not allow such pensions for exempted trusts — an argument that contradicts legal precedents.

💬 Employees Feel Betrayed
Thousands of steel plant employees now feel let down by a system that promised security but delivered confusion. Many retirees were hopeful that the Supreme Court’s clarity would finally bring them the pension they deserve — but EPFO’s resistance has turned those hopes into legal battles.

🧑⚖️ What’s at Stake Now?
The Bilaspur High Court petition seeks enforcement of EPS‑95 higher pension eligibility for all BSP employees who qualify under the original terms. The PF Trust has committed to bearing all legal costs for affected members. With over 36 teams under SEFI umbrella expected to follow suit, this could become a nationwide wave against EPFO’s approach.

🙌 A Call for Justice
Mr. Banchhor concluded that this isn’t just about pension — it’s about dignity and justice for workers who have served the nation’s steel sector for decades. The outcome of this case could set a precedent for thousands of other PSU workers facing similar issues.
